Introduction: Bill Johnston

My name is Bill Johnston. I am a Letters major with a focus on Constitutional Studies. This past fall I was accepted into the University of Oklahoma Law School and will be attending there next fall. Luckily, I will be attending with two of my best friends so I am very excited for that next step in my life. I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, OK and cannot imagine a better place to call home. I graduated from Heritage Hall high school in 2011 and have been at OU since. My father and older brother are both also Sooners, however, my mother is unfortunately and Oklahoma State alum so Bedlam is always interesting at our house. We have a small Maltese dog named Sugar, which is a very poor name for a male dog but it is an extremely long story.

More than anything I love sports. I am an avid fan of football, baseball, basketball and hockey. However, my favorite teams all have bizarre back stories as to why I cheer for them that take way too long to discuss but my favorite teams are the Chicago Cubs, Washington Redskins, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Chicago Blackhawks. As I mentioned in my blog about favorite places there is not much more I enjoy than a trip to Chicago to see the Cubs play at Wrigley Field.

After Law School, I am not entirely sure what I want to do with my life but I do know that I want to stay in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is and always will be home to me. This state has such wonderful people with so much to offer. I cannot imagine living in a big city filled with traffic all the time and lines everywhere you go or a Starbucks on every corner. I would like to practice law for an oil corporation in Oklahoma because I believe they are responsible for the great strides the state has made in the last fifteen years and that there is so much more they can do for this great state.

There is everything I like, so here is everything I dislike: Starbucks, Batman or any other superhero movie, Harry Potter or any other ridiculous fiction movie, and Dallas Cowboys fans.

  1. Okay for starters, I can side with you on disliking the Dallas Cowboys fans, but everything else, not so much. I've only met a very, very, very small handful of people who disliked Harry Potter and they didn't even give the movies (or books) a chance, so it doesn't really count. I'd really like to know your reasoning behind hating such an amazing series. Since there are a few superhero movies I'm not all too crazy about, I'll let you pass on that, though Batman is amazing. I mean, c'mon. It's Batman. But anyhow, congrats on getting accepted into Law school! That was a dream of mine once, but I switched to pre-med and now I'm hoping (and praying hard) that I get into OU med school when that time arrives and once I finish my application.

  2. I've got to agree with K. Disliking Harry Potter is blasphemous! But I'm an avid HP fan, so there's no reasoning with me. I also don't understand what a "ridiculous fiction movie" is since most movies are fiction unless it's a documentary. Does this mean you're not a Marvel or DC fan? Iron Man? The Avengers? Captain America? I'm a huge fan of superhero movies (except for Man of Steel. That was just strange). Anyway, congratulations on getting into law school! I've always dreamed of going to law school for social justice, but then I remember how much I hate studying the law, so yeah. Best of luck!

  3. Hi Bill! I've also got to agree with K. and Leslie about the Harry Potter thing. Those were some of my favorite books, especially when I was younger (but I still love them today). Like Leslie, I'm also curious what you mean by 'ridiculous fiction movies'. Does that include all fiction or just magical/fantasy-ish fiction? What sort of movies do you like to watch? Congrats on law school next semester! Good luck and I hope you have a great rest of your semester.

  4. Hey Bill, congrats on your acceptance to law school! It would be such a great experience to go through that with your buddies. Like the previous posters, I too am a fan of Harry Potter. I don't think I have ever met someone that stated out loud that they disliked the series. And my son loves all things superhero, so I kind of enjoy those too. Good luck with all of your studies this semester!

  6. Hi Bill! Congratulations on being accepted to OU Law! Boomer Sooner! It was very funny where you said that your mother is unfortunately an OSU fan, so I can only imagine how interesting that must make Bedlam for your family! It was also funny that you said you couldn't live somewhere where there was traffic and a Starbucks on every corner, because that is how I grew up near LA in and I must say not having to sit in hours of traffic anymore is what makes being landlocked in Oklahoma bearable!

  7. Hey Bill! Congrats on getting into Law School! That is a huge goal of mine, also, so it’s always encouraging to see people accepted. It’s a little reminder that the work is worth it. The legal aspects of Oil and Gas are so incredibly interesting. It’s half of the reason I've gotten into Environmental Science ironically enough. I do have to say, however, that Starbucks is absolutely amazing and life is inoperable without coffee. Good luck with this semester and with law school!

  8. Bill,

It’s nice to meet you! Congratulations on getting into the Law School at OU (that is no simple feat). I am originally from Colorado (as I am sure you read on my intro), but I have to agree with you that Oklahoma is filled with so many wonderful people. I feel so lucky to have met some of the people that I have during my time at OU.

Chicago cubs! I interned last summer in the Chicago area, so I was able to attend a baseball game at Wrigley field. It is definitely something you need to go experience (and this is coming from someone who has an unbiased opinion about the Cubs). The Blackhawks were also fun to watch, however I did not take the opportunity to do so in person. The North sure do love their hockey!

Good luck with all that you have ahead (in this semester and in Law School).

  9. Hey Bill! Congratulations on getting into Law School! That is so great! I cannot believe you don't like Harry Potter. That is like our CHILDHOOD!!! But to each his own! I can agree with you on Starbucks, probably because I am not a coffee person. I bet Bedlam is a really fun atmosphere with your family! I cannot imagine how this past Bedlam went for you guys!! Good luck in LAW SCHOOL, you'll do fantastic!

  10. Bill, congrats on getting into law school! That is so great, and I'm sure it makes graduating from OU undergrad a little more bearable. I think it's great that you want to stay in Oklahoma after you finish law school. I'm from Tulsa so I've also been in Oklahoma most of my life, but I think I want to travel and maybe live somewhere else for a few years before settling down here. I hope your semester is going well and yay for graduating soon!

  11. Hey Bill! I took a class over constitutional studies too and thought about going to law school. Congratulations in getting into OU Law! that is some great news and working for oil corporation is a great idea! Some law degrees don't make a lot of money anymore unless you're doing corporate or patent law. Your dog seems really cute! you should post a picture of your dog! Sugar for a male dog's name is hilarious and adorable! Oklahoma is a beautiful state and it sounds like you like staying in a small local town.

  12. Hey Bill, nice to meet you! Congrats on being accepted into law school, that’s a big accomplishment! I also really like Oklahoma a lot. I moved to Texas during high school and it was nothing like Oklahoma so it was kind of a relief when I got accepted at OU and got a chance to come back. I’m also a huge Harry Potter fan!

  13. Hey Bill! Congratulations on getting into Law School, that is an amazing accomplishment! I am not a native to Oklahoma, but I have fallen in love with it as I have gone to school here. It’s very unfortunate though, because I actually like most of the things you dislike… :) but that’s okay, because we are all allowed our own opinions. I like the Thunder too, but not as much as I like the Mavs. :):) It was great to meet you! Have a great semester!

  14. Hey Bill whats going on?

Congratulations on getting accepted for Law School here at OU, I hear that it is pretty hard to in, Great Job! I see that you graduated from Heritage Hall, You are one year older than me, but I knew some people in your grade who went there. I went to Deer Creek. I was wondering why you do not like Superhero movies? I can admit some of them are not good, but I find most of them pretty entertaining. Nice to meet you!

Yall get to go through Law School together.! I have lived in Oklahoma my entire life and I cannot imagine living anywhere else either. I hope that I always get to stay close to my roots and my family.

  16. Hey Bill!

First off congrats on getting into law school! That is awesome! I have a few friends who are going to law school, and I know how excited they were when they got accepted into the school they wanted! It is always nice to meet another baseball fan! I am a Yankees fan, but my brother is a giant Cubs fan and actually just got back from Spring Training.

  17. Nice to meet you! My house is also interesting at Bedlam as my dad is from Oklahoma State and I decided to go the OU route. It's cool that you want to go to law school, thought it sounds incredibly difficult to me, a psychology major going into counseling in the fall hopefully. Oklahoma is a great place to call home and I will miss it when I inevitably move away in the future. Good luck this semester!

  18. Hey Bill! Congrats on being accepted into OU law school. I'm graduating this spring as well, and was originally going to get my masters in electrical engineering, but decided against it. I certainly disagree with you about superhero movies, and fiction movies! Most of my favorite movies involve superheroes! Especially X-Men. But everyone is entitled to their own opinions! Sports are certainly enough entertainment that you don't need crazy fictional movies anyways! Good luck with the rest of your semester and in law school!

  19. Hey, Bill! First of all, congratulations on getting into OU Law! That is really awesome and super exciting that you will get to attend law school with your best friends! An old teacher of mine from High School transferred to Heritage Hall back in 2009, Dr. Chris Hamel. I’m not sure if you had him or not but he was definitely one of my favorite history teachers in high school. Good luck with the rest of this semester and in law school!
